The Surrogacy Journey

How it Works

We empower you to have the right journey for you. Here’s how

Surrogacy is a big undertaking. It can be emotionally difficult on top of being financially challenging and is often intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be scary or unachievable. Many agencies will tell you what to do and when to do it. We won’t.

At Family Inceptions, we will talk about your options with you, and listen as you consider how each will impact your unique family and situation. Then we’ll empower you to make the choices that feel right for you and support you as we make your dream a reality.

Even with your unique choices, every surrogacy journey follows a similar roadmap. We have taken the complex process of surrogacy and provided an easy-to-follow roadmap to help you successfully navigate your journey.

Phase 1: Consultation

Schedule a Free Consultation

One-hour long conference to discuss our program and understand all your needs. This can be done in person, on the phone, or over video chat.

Complete the IP Questionnaire for surrogacy.

We need to get to know you. We will ask you about your desires, challenges, and expectations so that we can best help you.

Ask Questions

Really. Ask LOTS of questions. There is nothing that you can ask us that will embarrass us. Anything you can ask, we’ve heard before. Our professional staff is ready and willing to compassionately address all your questions and concerns.

We will review your questionnaire and answer all your questions so that you better understand the process and what we do to help you every step of the way.

Factors to Consider:

  • Have you created a budget?
For many, the biggest hurdle to surrogacy is the cost. We can assist you in providing a surrogate expense breakdown so that you can create a realistic budget for your surrogacy journey.

  • Have you selected your IVF clinic yet?
If not, we can assist you in selecting a clinic that offers the services you need.

  • Will you need to use donor eggs or donor sperm?
Family Inceptions has a fabulous egg donor program with many women who are willing to help you in your desire to have a child. We can assist you in locating the right donor for you.

Phase 2: Matchmaking

Sign Agency Agreement

To begin, we have you sign a retainer agreement and make an initial payment.

Making a Match

When matching you to a surrogate, our process is deeper than just selecting a surrogate from a database. Because we don’t match an individual with intended parents just for the sake of matching, we look for surrogates who share similar values and desires for the journey you are embarking on together.

Match Meeting

Part 1. Once both parties are interested, we will facilitate a phone meeting between you and the potential surrogate.

Part 2. Provided the phone meeting goes well, we will then schedule a face-to-face meeting at a neutral location or a video conference meeting.

Factors to Consider:

Our surrogates must:

  • Be between the ages of 21-40
  • Have delivered a baby and is currently or has raised at least one healthy child
  • Not have had prior pregnancy complications with no more than three C-sections
  • Live in a stable and healthy environment
  • Not receiving any form of government assistance
  • Clear our criminal background checks
  • Not be a smoker or drug user

Phase 3: Screenings

Medical Screening

Once your surrogate is selected, she’s required to complete screening before you can actually begin treatment. Your clinic determines the surrogate’s screening protocol. A typical surrogate screening will entail a physical and pelvic examination, drug and nicotine testing, and infectious disease testing.

Psychological Screening

A typical psych screening is a 3-part process. Part 1: The intended parents. Part 2: The surrogate and her spouse/partner (completed as part of the agency’s pre-screening prior to matching) and Part 3. The Group (Intended parents and surrogate and her spouse/partner)

Legal Contracts

Once the surrogate has been screened and has received medical and psychological clearance, all parties will be required to have a Gestational Surrogacy Agreement (GSA). The agreement between the surrogate and intended parents, establishes parental rights, financial responsibility, confidentiality, and privacy.

Factors to Consider:

Family Inceptions works with a licensed, bonded, and insured escrow company who manages all aspects of the funds related to the surrogate’s compensation and expenses.

Phase 4: Surrogate Prep

Cycle Schedule

Your clinic will provide a cycle schedule, which will outline in detail the next steps to complete the medical processes required for transfer.

Surrogate Preparation

What Method?
This will vary depending on whether you are using fresh eggs (from the intended mother/egg donor) or frozen embryos. Once you know what method you’ll be using, we can go over details specific to your unique situation.

Your clinic will provide the date for the transfer. You have the choice to be present with your surrogate if you like.

International Families

Surrogates in the United States
Many of our intended parents express confusion surrounding what would motivate a woman to carry a child for someone that they’ve never met. Especially when they’re from another part of the world.

First of all, know that this is a natural thought process. It’s hard to blindly trust that a person on the other side of the world would hand over a child that she has carried to someone she may not know very well.

We want you to understand that our surrogates have one goal. And that is to build a family. Their families are complete, but these women want to experience one more pregnancy. They want the empowering pride that comes with giving another human being such a huge gift. For them, the goal will always be to return your child. And, if we’re being very honest, if these women wanted another child, there would be much easier ways for them to do it than to become a surrogate and then refuse to surrender the baby.

We are highly selective and only choose surrogates who have had easy, healthy pregnancies and desire to give a gift of a child to another family. In addition, our surrogates go through a rigorous screening process, and we only accept a small number. Once intended parents start to get to know their surrogate by reading about her and her family, seeing pictures and talking to her, their level of trust increases.

How Often Do I Have to Travel to the U.S.?
Intended parents are more than welcome to visit their U.S. surrogate mothers more than twice, but only two visits are required during the entire process. We require you to meet her in person at least once before she attempts pregnancy, and you’ll need to come for the birth as well.

After we have located just the right surrogate for you, we help schedule your appointments in the United States to:

Meet your team
On this trip to America, you’ll meet your U.S. surrogate mother. We strive to complete as much as possible before your arrival through email, phone, and Skype communication to maximize your time in the U.S. This way, meetings with the clinic, surrogate, reproductive endocrinologist, psychologist, and attorney can normally be accomplished in a three to five-day trip.

Witness the birth of your child
The second visit to the United States will be to witness the birth of your child. We will take care of obtaining a birth certificate and a passport for your baby. Typically, intended parents stay in the U.S. for around two weeks following the birth of the child. Many intended parents choose to come to the US several weeks prior to the due date so that they don’t miss the birth.

Phase 5: Baby Prep

Pregnancy is an Exciting Time
For many intended parents, pregnancy is one of the most exciting and memorable times in their lives. Many intended parents sit in on ultrasounds, feel the baby kick, and attend doctor appointments. Remember- there are no hard and fast rules for your relationship with your surrogate. We can help you navigate the relationship building process so that everyone is comfortable, and you can be as involved as both parties feel comfortable with.

Parentage Order

How/When your parental rights will be established will depend on if your child will be born in a pre-birth or post-birth state.

Many surrogates want to share this experience with you. It will be a decision that you will make together collectively. It’s also a choice that needs to be fluid. There should be a “best case scenario” plan and a backup plan.

Factors to Consider:

The degree of involvement varies from case to case and is worked out between you and your surrogate upon matching.
