Week 5: Criteria Intended Parents Look for in a Surrogate

Have you ever wondered, “What do intended parents look for when they are seeking a gestational surrogate? Who actually uses a gestational surrogate? Why would they need one?”

If you have, you’re asking smart questions! Finding the right gestational surrogate that meets many of the required criteria of the intended parents is crucial. After all, the surrogate that they choose is going to be entrusted to carry the most precious, important piece of their lives.

It’s important to note that many intended parents do not have surrogacy in mind when they dreamt of starting their families. Sometimes, by the time they reach the surrogacy option, they have already endured several rounds of treatment or heartbreak. Luckily though, surrogacy is an option they can explore.

In the case of other individuals, such as gay male couples or single men, they physically require the help of a gestational surrogate. In addition, other couples and singles may have a medical need (such as a necessary hysterectomy) that prevents them from carrying a child themselves.

When a couple is facing infertility and other challenges that push them to reach out to a surrogate as a piece of the puzzle that is building their family, there are understandably a lot of emotions for them to work through. From disappointment to elation, and just about everything in between, you can expect that your intended parents are going to have mixed reactions to different aspects of their relationship with you, the surrogate.

An important thing to remember is that you are not part of the problem – you’re the solution to the family’s dreams of children! As a helper in this amazing journey, you have the unique opportunity to give one of the most precious gifts ever given: New life.

Different intended parents may want different things from their surrogate A few examples are some want a close relationship while others desire privacy. Perhaps your intended parents adhere to certain religious requirements and desire that their surrogate do the same while she carries their child. Some may want to attend every OB appointment while some may live out of state and would like to be included via FaceTime.

Whatever your intended parents are looking for or may require, the relationship of a surrogacy agency, gestational surrogate and intended parents forms a triangle, which is the strongest shape in nature. Together, the three of us will work collaboratively to create an ideal match and a strong bond to create a family!
